The story follow “The Thief” a Christlike figure who engages in a journey from death to a tower, where he meets a mysterious figure known as “The Alchemist”. There, he is recruited on a mission to bring together several figures, who represent the worst side of humanity, so, together, they can embark on journey to The Holy Mountain, reaching immortality.Opening scene
Alejandro Jodorowsky’s films are hard to process, especially this one, full of grotesque, religious and surreal imagery. The film may require several viewings to properly understand all its details. In essence the film is a about a spiritual odyssey that transcends all terrible aspects of humanity: war, politics, greed, corruption… “El Topo”, a previous work of the director, was about one man taking this quest, “The Holy Mountain” it’s about all society.
The cinematography its truly inspiring, filled with breathtaking abstract imagery and bright psychedelic colours. The Holy Mountain remains a challenging masterpiece of world cinema. You need an open mind to appreciate all it has to offer. The film is a surreal experience, and while may not be to everyone’s tastes, it’s still highly recommend to anyone seeking something new.
