The Horror! The Horror!: Comic Books the Government Didn’t Want You To Read
Today’s parents are worried about the long term effects of violent games on their children, well, in the 50’s they were horrified about the effects of horror comics. The publication of psychologist Fredric Wertham’s book “Seduction of the Innocent” stated that comic books were a serious cause of juvenile delinquency.
This book it’s all about censorship and the history of horror comics. Each chapter begins with a short essay about some aspect of comics history focusing on excerpts and rare covers to show a broad representation of publisher and artist’s styles. The reading may feel a little pretentious at times, still, this a brilliant anthology of the most controversial horror comics from the 50’s.
Book Extras: DVD of a 50’s television broadcast investigating the dangers of comic book consumption.
