The Iconic Portraits of Philippe Halsman

Philippe Halsman  (1906-1979) was an American portrait photographer  born in Riga, Latvia.  From the 1940s through the 1970s, Halsman’s sparkling portraits of celebrities, intellectuals, and politicians appeared on the covers and pages of the big picture magazines. His dynamic and imaginative photography broke the rules of the day by going against the soft focus style of the time and giving sharp focus to his subjects.
In 1958 Halsman was listed in Popular Photography magazine’s “World’s Ten Greatest Photographers”, and in 1975 he received the Life Achievement in Photography Award from the American Society of Magazine Photographers.
