Pafekuto Buru/ Perfect Blue (Movie, 1997)
A retired pop-singer-turned-actress’ sense of reality is shaken when she is stalked by an obsessed fan and seemingly a ghost of her past.
Based on the novel of the same name by Yoshikazu Takeuchi, Perfect Blue is a mind-bending psychological thriller about the price of fame. Definitely not for kids, and clearly not your typical anime, the plot is dark and it gets progressively violent until the unexpected climax.
Darren Aronofsky bought the American filming rights to this movie, which he purchased for $59,000, just so he could film the now infamous “bath scene” with Jennifer Connelly in his own film Requiem for a Dream (2000). Also there are several similarities with Aronofsky’s Black Swan.
Perfect Blue will keep you on the edge of your seat all the way through. A must-see!
