The Temptation of St. Anthony is an often-repeated subject in history of art and literature, concerning the supernatural temptation reportedly faced by Saint Anthony the Great during his sojourn in the Egyptian desert. This tale was an inspiration for numerous painters including Hieronymus Bosch, Paul Cézane and even Salvador Dalí, but Matthias Grünewald´s  oil on wood version of the theme stands out from the competition.
